AHLUL-BAYT, FAMILY OF RASULLULLAH (SAW): INTRODUCTION
By Ustaz Syed Hasan Alatas
English translation by Radzi Sapiee

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim. In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Assalamu'alaikum, Peace be upon you.

Allah said in the Quran:
Verily Allah wishes to remove all impurities from you, O people of the house and to purify you completely. (Q.S. Al-Ahzab : 33)

The Ahlul Bait are family of the Prophet SAW very close to him. It is related by Ummu Salamah a wife of Rasulullah SAW that once he was at their house sleeping and wearing a blanket. Then came his daughter (from the deceased first wife Khadijah) Fatimah who brought a bowl of Khazirah, a type of food. Rasulullah SAW told Fatimah, Call your husband and your two sons Hassan and Hussain. Fatimah then called them all.

While they were together sitting and eating with Rasulullah SAW then came the revelation as mentioned in the verse above. At the time Rasulullah SAW was holding the tip of the blanket which he had with him and started to cover them all. While holding his hands in supplication, he uttered a prayer. O Allah these are my Ahlul Bait (members of my house) and my progenies, thus abolish all impurities from them and purify them with total purification.

Prophet SAW uttered this prayer thrice. Ummu Salamah then added: I put my head under the cover but the Prophet SAW pulled away the blanket while saying Verily you are in virtue twice. (This was related by Thabrani who got the story from Ummu Salamah)

Al-Fakhrul Razi in his commentary Tafsir al-Kabir touched on what happened after the 132nd verse of Thaha was revealed to the Prophet. The verse said: Ask your family members to do the prayers and be you patient in carrying it out.

This is mentioned in a Hadith (saying) of the Prophet related by Hamad bin Salamah who received it from Ali bin Zaid who in turn received from Anas RA. It is said that after the verse was revealed, Rasulullah SAW would often call out to his family when passing the house of Ali and Fatimah. The Prophet asked them to do the prayers while repeating the Quranic verse which said: Verily Allah wishes to remove all impurities from you, O people of the house and to purify you completely.

Once there happened an incident which show the high degree of sacrifice Saidina Ali bin Abi Thalib, his wife Fatimah Azzahra and their two sons Hassan and Hussain are willing to make. While Fatimah was serving bread for them to break fast, there came a poor person, an orphan and a prisoner of war starving and asking for food. Immediately without any doubt their food was handed to the people leaving themselves without anything to eat. Thus came a Quranic revelation which says: They gave out food which which they badly need, to the poor, the orphan and the prisoner of war. Verily they gave because of Allah, and did not expect any return nor saying of thanks.
This is part of the ethics and excellent character of the family of Rasulullah SAW who are very close to him. Just take the example of Saidatuna Fatimah Azzahra. Although she is the beloved daughter of Prophet the skin of her hands often crack because of bailing and carrying water apart from milling wheat. Once it was suggested that she asked her father to give a servant to help out her c s. The Prophet did not comply. He just taught Fatimah Azzahra to recite the zikir (remembrance of Allah formula) of Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 33 times.

Once it happened that an old man was taking abolution and this was observed by the Prophet SAWs then young grandsons Hassan and Hussain. The way the old man took abolution was imperfect so this must be rectified. But how can you correct an older man which must be shown respect.

Thank God both kids are bright and have excellent character. They pretend to argue while taking abolution accusing the other of being imperfect in the way he took abolution. The old man who was nearby then asked them to repeat their abolution. He became perplexed to see the Prophets grandsons smooth way in doing it that he started questioning himself, maybe he was the one who did it imperfectly. The man then asked who the kids really are. Then only he knew these are the beloved grandsons of the Prophet who received direct tutelage from him in many useful matters. *

THE AHLUL-BAYT WITH REGARD TO THE PROPHET RASULLULLAH (SAW)

By Ustaz Syed Hasan Alatas
English translation by Radzi Sapiee

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim. In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Assalamu'alaikum, Peace be upon you.

Through Muhammad SAW, Allah Almighty gives guidance to the whole Ummah, the people and show us the right way, the way favoured by Allah SWT. Through his relentless pursuit and fight, Rasulullah SAW and his descendants succeeded in spreading Islam to all over the world. And this they did without asking any fee or monetary gain, in line with the words of Allah as said in the holy book Al-Quran.

Say (O Muhammad), I do not ask for any wage from you in this mission, except for love towards (my) kith and kins (Asysyura: verse 23)

This verse came down after Rasulullah SAW have gone through a lot of trouble and hardship to save the Arabs from their former dark lives. They used to lead their lives astray, full of injustice, ignored by the rest of the world but after the Prophet came into the picture, they became enlightened and a new age of truth, justice and unity started such that the Arabs became a unified people respected by all. Rasulullah SAW came to save the whole mankind from ignorance. They are taught to worship only Allah SWT, the creator of the worlds and everything in existence.

Previously, mankind were at a low lacking humanity what more ethics. They were more animalistic in nature, the strong preying on the weak, the rich taking from the poor. These soon changed as the people were taught to become humane. The Jahiliyah or age of darkness full of stupidity and ignorance which saw the masses being fooled widespread by those in power gave way to an age full of love for knowledge, giving birth to scholars and sages who led and showed the right way for all and sundry.

Rasulullah SAW and his believing descendants travelled to all parts of the world to spread Islam and its true teachings. Despite all their troubles and selfless efforts, there are people who simply forget all their good deeds and try to kick them out of the picture. Thus Rasulullah SAW reminded the Ummah that he never expected any fee, wage or monetary gain in return. He just hoped that the people know how to be thankful by showing their love and affection for the pious family of the Prophet who fought hard to uphold Islam and expound its truth.

Since many nowadays do not care to take heed of the Prophets message, the Islamic world is in turmoil. Just look at how the people are divided into small factions each vying for supremacy over the others. They formed small nations dependent on the enemies of Islam. They have to bow down to these enemies and lose their dignity as they are too weak to assert anything due to them being fragmented and weak.

While the teachings of Islam command its adherents to fight in one line, strong like a solid building with each part strengthening the others, in reality the Muslims have become like a fragile building waiting to go down at anytime. The Prophets reminder asking the Ummah to always help support each other is not practised. It has come to the extent that when there are Muslims in trouble and hardship, those who have the means to assist simply shrug off or ignore the problem. What is strange, it is the non-Muslims who often came at the forefront to provide assistance. Of course this tends to come with a cost which in the end could turn up to be very detrimental to the Muslims at large.

Thus if Muslims today want the Ummah to be unified as one respected by others they should heed back the message and command of Allah and His Messenger, the Prophet Muhammad SAW. They have to regroup back and cooperate in all mutual matters, ready to give and take when there are small conflicting matters. They have to fight in line like a solid building with every part strengthening the other, just like one unified body in which when one part is hurt the others feel it too. Such a body of people would always help each other in the path of truth gaining the goodwill of Allah, never cooperating in matters of evil, never turning against each other or break up.

God willing, by following the examples set by Prophet Muhammad SAW and his Ahlul Bait the Ummah would regain its past glory, InsyaAllah! *

GETTING TO KNOW THE AHLUL-BAIYT, FAMILY OF RASULLULLAH SAW:
SITI FATHIMAH A.Z. AND HER FAMILY
By Ustaz Syed Hasan Alatas
English translation by Radzi Sapiee

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim. In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Assalamu'alaikum, Peace be upon you.

Siti Fatimah Azzahra AS is the most beloved daughter of Rasulullah SAW. Siti Fatimah Azzahra is a woman of fine example. Her unquestioning loyalty and faith towards her father and mother is something to be followed by women all over the world. Siti Fatimah Azzahra has sacrified her whole life for the concern of Islam and its followers. Full of love and obedience, Siti Fatimah stayed at the side of her husband, the Amirul Mukminin (commander of the faithfuls) Ali bin Abi Thalib in both good and bad times. She succeeded in educating her two sons Hassan and Hussain with exemplarary good behaviour. Siti Fatimah always strive to help the poor and those in need.

Siti Fatimah Azzahra was raised by her father Rasulullah SAW and received his direct education. The love the Prophet has towards Siti Fatimah Azzahra was also amplified by the fact that her behaviour and habits resembled very much that of her father. Living a simple life full of worship towards God is among the traits of Fatimah Azzahra. Her relationship with Allah Almighty is sincere untainted by any material wants nor the need to feel or be important in the eyes of men.

Asma binti Umais related her exemplary behaviour thus: One day I was in the house of Siti Fatimah Azzahra. Suddenly Rasulullah SAW arrived at her house. Siti Fatimah was wearing a gold necklace given by her husband Imam Ali bin Abi Thalib KW (May Allah bless his countenance). When Rasulullah SAW saw the necklace he said: O my daughter, are you proud the be called the daughter of Muhammad when you yourself wear jaababirah ? (ornaments worn by proud women of nobility).

Immediately Siti Fatimah took off the necklace and sold it. She used the proceeds from the necklace to buy a slave and then set him free. When Rasulullah SAW heard the news he was so happy. The prophet then uttered a prayer for Siti Fatimah and her whole family.

In another incident, Thuban related: When Rasulullah SAW returned from a battle, as usual he would stop and the house of her daughter Siti Fatimah That was when the Prophet SAW saw both his grandsons wearing silver bracelets. He cancelled his stop and returned straight to his house. Siti Fatimah came to know what had happened and realised it was because of the ornaments worns by the grandsons. Without hesitating, she opened the bracelets and crushed it to pieces. This made the still very young Saidina Hassan and Hussain cried. Although the pieces were then recovered and handed back to the two, there were still upset as they didnt know anything.

The two continued to cry and went to their grandfather the Prophet SAW. He took the pieces and asked Thuban to buy replacements, for Siti Fatimah a necklace made from ashab (a type of specially woven thread) and two bracelets made from ivory for his grandchildren. At the same time the Prophet SAW said this:

They are my Ahlul Bait, I dont want them to lose benificence just because of these worldly matters.

(The story from Thuban is recorded by At-Thabbarry in his book Siratul Mustafa). *

GETTING TO KNOW THE AHLUL-BAIYT, FAMILY OF RASULULLAH SAW: SITI FATIMAH A.Z.. THE PIOUS ONE.... Bismillahirrahmanirrahim. In the name of Allah the Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Assalamu'alaikum, Peace be upon you.

FATIMAH AZZAHRA, the Prophets beloved daughter followed the footsteps of her father in the way she led her life especially in abstinence and piety. That is why she is also called Al-Batul (the very pious person).

Her daily grind in managing her household while carrying out responsibilities towards husband and children, milling wheat with her own hands until it is full of blisters, helping the poor and those in need, assisting in battles nursing the wounded including her own father and many other functions, all that never stopped her from carrying out the prescribed worship especially at night. Said her son Saidina Hassan:

Every night I see my mother praying especially on Friday night, I heard her always supplicating first for every Muslim men and women and this made me ask:

Why do you never supplicate for your own self the way you supplicate for others?

My mother just answered: We have to supplicate for our neighbours first, the only for our own family!

Hasan al-Basri once said: In this community there is no woman with such piety to rival Siti Fatimah Azzahra. She just went on praying until her legs swell.

What is done by Siti Fatimah is exactly the same done by her father Muhammad Rasulullah SAW and he love others more than he love himself.

Fatimah Azzahra grew up and was raised under the patronage of her father the Prophet and guided by her own husband Imam Ali bin Abi Thalib KWH, a foremost Islamic fighter. She saw with her own eyes the hardship and struggles her father had to go through in defending and spreading the teachings of Islam. She and her own family experienced first-hand the sufferings of her father and husband in many battles until they finally gained victory. *
